The Premises
The exterior of any business premises can make you seem like an easy target. If there is litter and graffiti outside your premises then this can make it an attractive prospect to thieves. If the exterior is well maintained then opportunistic thieves will know that you are attentive and that this will probably extend to your crime prevention policy.
-
It may seem obvious, but you should always ensure that entrances such as doors, fire escapes and windows are securely locked when not being used.
-
A robust alarm system is imperative, but don’t just “fit and forget”! Maintain your security systems so that they are always doing the job of protecting your assets. Career criminals are able to identify poorly functioning security systems.
-
The same applies to your CCTV. A good system will implement facial recognition and provide good quality images that can lead to a prosecution if you are targeted.
-
Thieves love dark areas where they can hide. If there is inadequate street lighting around your business premises then invest in security lighting with motion sensors. Be conscious of hedges and shrubbery too, these provide hiding places so keep them well trimmed.
-
Don’t entice thieves by leaving items of value in easy view. High value items should be secured within the premises and not be seen as easy pickings.
-
Assess the strength of your doors and windows and the locking systems on them. You may wish to install external shutters or strengthened glass to strengthen them.
