You can report a crime in several ways:
In the event of an emergency where the crime is still taking place, you should always 999 and ask for the police.
If the situation is not an emergency, please do not call 999. The police need to be able to deal with as many emergency cases as possible and are swamped with calls every year that does not require their immediate intervention. Of course, this does not mean that your situation is unimportant, it simply means that the police are able to prioritize cases to help those most urgently in need. Most forces offer a 101 non-emergency number. The 101 number is used for:
-
Speaking with a specific police officer
-
A general enquiry
-
Reporting an incident whereby the crime has occurred and there is no immediate emergency such as a minor traffic incident, theft or suspicion of illegal activity
-
Providing information relating to criminal or antisocial behaviour
You are also able to go to your nearest police station and report the crime there. The details of your nearest station can be found online, or in a telephone directory. If you prefer to remain anonymous then you can also contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
If you affected by crime whilst travelling on the rail network or Tube, you can call BTP on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016 to report it and request assistance.
